The Late CLOBS & New Found Teachers

A valued information from CLOBS64/66, Ooi Chin Wah:

叶志颜老师 和 陈健来同学passed away recently in March. According to Ken Lye's relative whom I met at his funeral, he was hospitalised just before the last Chinese New Year for skin cancer. No one knew that it could deteriorate so fast that he left us about two months later.

We were told by Team Chye that our old English teacher, P.K. Nair, is now staying in Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged in Sungai Dua. We plan to visit him soon.

Mr. Lam, 蓝正隆老师taught me mathematics in Form 3. His clear and crisp pronunciation, good command of the language and the subject stood him in good stead in making mathematics so much easier for us to understand. I remember there was a problem in deductive geometry that our class Form 3D (1964) could not solve. We struggled with the question for several days without success. Finally, we copied the question on the blackboard before the maths lesson. Mr. Lam came in, saw it and conquered it after pondering for a short while. Since then, he has become our inspiration and idol.

Today, forty five years later, he is still as witty , as sharp and as humourous. During the lunch, he taught us Economics 101 with applications in the present financial crisis. Terms like leverage, foreclosure, sub-prime loans etc are explained in simple layman's terms. Morever, he elaborates on currency trading as an added bonus.

Another old boy from another year which happened to be at the same restaurant but different table thought that Mr. Lam was a student from our batch i.e. he was not our teacher but our contemporary in CLHS!
